Welcome to the new research page. This edition is a short version of what I hope will become a section where there are exchanges of ideas, receipt and dissemination of research-related information and publication of aspects of research. It is hoped that information from this page will result in an increase in the appetite for research amongst ACPWH members.

The National Physiotherapy Research Network (NPRN) The NPRN has been funded for five years by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy to encourage and facilitate research nationally. It aims to develop physiotherapy-related research by establishing a network of twenty regional “hubs” ‘to promote increased awareness and capacity, and facilitate high-quality research activity that will be relevant to practitioners and respond to health care needs.' ( www.csp.org.uk/director/effectivepractice/research ). As reported in the last journal, the further aims of the NPRN are to sponsor research within the workplace and encourage clinicians to become involved. Some of you may have been involved in some of the activities run by the NPRN – it would be really good to hear from you so we can disseminate any information amongst our members.
Current ACPWH researchers Are you involved in or have you completed a research or audit project? Are you involved in a Master's or PhD project? Are you an established researcher? If yes to any of these questions, would you be willing to submit a short report or abstract of your work to date? It is important that ACPWH members are aware of what work is being undertaken nationally as this will generate questions and foster new research ideas. At future conferences we are hoping to have some short research presentations and maybe poster presentations as well as the longer keynote lectures. We will be calling for abstracts for the 2008 conference soon so perhaps members could take this opportunity to think of what they could present at future conferences. There are several researchers on the executive committee and we would be willing to give support to members who are starting out on their research pathway.
Research Awards Currently the ACPWH do not have awards that are exclusively for research though the Dame Josephine Barnes award is open for members who are undertaking research as well as formal postgraduate courses. All applications are considered on their merit and funding is often awarded for members undertaking research. For further details of this award, go to the ACPWH website.
Research theory Research can be daunting for novices and experienced researchers alike and many proposed projects never get off the ground. Would members be interested in short articles on different aspects of research such as research proposals, ethics, statistics, funding, critical review of articles, literature searching? Please let me know what you would find useful.
Links with the website I am hoping to develop a research page on our website which will reflect information from this page, provide current information of involvement of the ACPWH in national research projects and provide links to useful research sites. Watch this space!
